The Last of England

by Ted Walker

A colourful, outspoken and respected author and poet, Ted Walker married his childhood sweetheart Lorna and raised a family in his home county of West Sussex.

‘The Last of England,’ is a deeply moving account of Lorna’s long and fatal battle with a particularly aggressive form of facial cancer, her bravery and the deeply disturbing effect that her suffering had on Ted. Written with characteristic honesty and sensitivity Ted describes  his great difficulty in coming to terms with his wife’s illness and eventual death. First escaping to Spain, and then returning to England, he recalls how he began to accept Lorna’s death and found new happiness before returning once again to Spain.

Alan Ross, Times Literary Supplement wrote, ‘Flooded by love, and written with unembarrassing reverence, it has a dignity and grace that make what might have been intolerable, tolerable…’

This book really spells out the pain of seeing a loved one suffer and the anguish of living on alone but is done with such profundity that it will bring comfort to anyone either widowed or having to face up to inevitable widowhood, especially men, who may have difficulty sharing or verbalizing their thoughts and emotions. Ted Walker died in March 2004
